We owe a debt of gratitude to writer Regina M Flanagan, who waded into some intellectual topics and conducted numerous interviews for her feature on an innovative graduate program in the University of Minnesota School of Architecture. The program powers leading-edge research endeavors in Minnesota architecture and construction firms, and we couldn’t be happier with the way Regina translated the heady subject matter for a general audience.

In the gaps between larger projects, I take on writing assignments – most of them self-instigated. With a particular journal or publication in mind, I choose topics that I’m curious about and want to explore in-depth such as cross-disciplinary projects or people whose work is under-recognized. My writing often includes original photographs and ranges from profiles of individual artists, designers and projects, to technical pieces about impactful research and new technologies.

Landscape Architecture (LAM) magazine published a series of my pieces including profiles of artists Brad Goldberg and Athena Tacha who work across disciplines. Another article for LAM describes collaborative relationships between artists and landscape architects including Ann Hamilton and Michael Mercil with Michael Van Valkenburgh for Teardrop Park in New York City, and Jody Pinto and Igancio Bunster Ossa of Wallace, Roberts, Todd LLC for the Santa Monica Promenade.

I also contribute to professional journals, and a textbook, The Practice of Public Art, Cameron Chartiere and Shelly Willis, Ed. New York, Routledge, 2008 features my essay “The Millennium Park Effect:  A Tale of Two Cities.” The essay examines the public/private partnership that produced Chicago’s Millennium Park and explores its implications for the field of public art.

Recently I wrote for Architecture MN about the DeafSpace Design Principles expressed in a new residence hall for the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf, Faribault, Minnesota and the innovative MS degree in research at the University of Minnesota School of Architecture that is leading to exciting new design practices and technologies.
